Luca Bastiani was born on 2 May 1977 in Rome. He gained his first experience as a violin maker by restoring some instruments from his own collection. After three years of training in Gubbio, Bastiani obtained his qualification as a “Master Violin and Bow Maker” under the guidance of Guerriero Spataffi and Marcello Di Sante.
In 2003 he was employed by the workshop “Liutarte” in Naples, where he specialized in the making of string instruments based on the models of the Neapolitan masters Alessandro, Nicola and Ferdinando Gagliano. He deepened his knowledge of their work through research in local historical documents.
In the summer of 2003, Bastiani attended the course “Set‑up and Adjustment of String Instruments” with the Florentine masters Michele Mecatti and Paolo Sorgentone at the “Sinfonia” music school in Lucca.
In 2006 he moved to Cremona, where, under the guidance of Giovanni Lucchi, he obtained a postgraduate diploma from the Lombardy region in bow maintenance. Since then, Bastiani has continually broadened his experience by collaborating with some of the finest violin makers in Cremona and, under the direction of Francesco Toto, further specializing in the construction and adjustment of violins, violas and cellos. Today, Bastiani lives and works in Cremona.
